Choosing Textbooks for IEPs Using Objective and Subjective Measures

There are many variables when choosing textbooks for an IEP. This session will describe two objective methods for analyzing textbook passages: readability and vocabulary difficulty. In addition, this session will discuss ways to elicit teachers’ opinions about textbook difficulty. Triangulating these three measures can help programs select level-appropriate textbooks.

Objectives: By the end of the webinar, participants will learn how to use:
  • an online readability tool to determine the grade level of reading passages

  • an online vocabulary tool to determine the vocabulary difficulty of reading passages

  • the readability and vocabulary difficulty levels to decide which textbooks are most appropriate for each of their program levels
