Bio
Catherine C. (Cate) Madden is the Director of the Intensive English Program at North Carolina State University, where she has held a leadership role since its inception in 2011. With a career spanning over 35 years, Cate has held leadership roles in multiple educational settings, including as Director of Academic Affairs at UC-Irvine and as ESL Coordinator in Durham Public Schools. Her teaching portfolio includes instruction across all language skills for diverse learner populations, from bilingual elementary students to global executives. In 2024, she expanded her international impact through teacher training initiatives with NC State’s Global Training Initiative, reaching over 100 educators in Azerbaijan. Cate is a dedicated professional with a strong commitment to service in the field. She actively volunteers as a proposal reviewer for TESOL, NAFSA, and EnglishUSA and has presented widely on language assessment and professional development. Known for her energy, diplomacy, and passion for the field, she brings a collaborative and experienced voice to every role she undertakes. As a long-standing advocate for English language programs and a consistent contributor to EnglishUSA conferences, Cate’s leadership is deeply rooted in community-building and advancing the profession.
