Back to Find an English Language Program

Organization Overview

The Georgia Tech Language Institute’s Intensive English Program is designed to help international students prepare to study in an American academic setting, for international professionals who would like to improve their communication skills to further their careers, and for those who would like to communicate in English more effectively for personal or social reasons.

The GTLI IEP offers seven levels of proficiency, from beginning to advanced. In each level, full-time students are required to take four classes, each class meeting 5 hours/week. The intensive program runs five 8-week sessions per calendar year. Most students are able to complete a level within the 8-week session; however, some students need to repeat a level in order to achieve all the learning outcomes of that level.

All levels focus on four skill areas: grammar, writing, reading and speaking/listening classes. The first four levels of the program focus on establishing foundational skills, while the upper levels (500-700) focus on expanding skills and applying them to academic and professional contexts and tasks. Students also can take elective courses that may focus on academic or professional topics, such as TOEFL prep or presentation skills.

In addition to the curriculum and instruction in the classroom, students in the intensive program are given the opportunity to participate in a wide range of student activities, which give them the opportunity to have authentic communication practice and a deeper understanding of American culture.
