Organization Overview

The Culture and Intensive English Program (CIEP) at the University of Northern Iowa (UNI) is a year-round, intensive English language and cultural preparation program designed primarily for non-native English speakers who plan to study at UNI or another university in the United States.

🌍 What CIEP Is

The CIEP offers intensive academic English instruction focused on listening, speaking, reading, writing, grammar, and academic communication skills.

It also provides cultural orientation and experiences, helping students learn about American academic culture as well as social and community life in the U.S., because understanding culture helps students use English more effectively.

The program supports students preparing to enter undergraduate or graduate academic study and helps bridge gaps in language proficiency for university admission or success.

📚 Program Components

Core Instruction

English language classes that integrate skills such as speaking, listening, reading, writing, and pronunciation.

Placement in appropriate levels from high beginner to advanced.

Pathway Options
In addition to standard instruction, CIEP offers pathway programs that allow students to take academic credit courses at UNI while completing higher-level English training — helping them transition into degree programs smoothly.
