Organization Overview
The English Language Center (ELC) at The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) is a premier academic unit providing high-quality English language instruction, academic preparation, and intercultural engagement for international students. As part of UTSA Global Initiatives, the ELC supports the university’s mission of internationalization, access, and student success.
Mission
The ELC empowers students with the English proficiency, academic skills, and cultural understanding needed to thrive in U.S. higher education and global environments. It fosters a welcoming, inclusive learning community that promotes academic excellence and cross-cultural connection.
Programs and Offerings
1. Academic English Program (AEP): Offers five proficiency levels, from beginner to advanced. Students receive 20 hours per week of instruction in academic reading, writing, oral communication, grammar, TOEFL prep, and U.S. culture.
2. UTSA Pathway Program: Designed for conditionally admitted international students, combining English instruction with credit-bearing courses that apply toward a degree program, easing the transition to full-time university study.
3. Global Academy: Offers flexible, online English courses supported by UTSA’s academic standards. With 24/7 access to materials, over 130 course options, and live speaking practice twice a week, it prepares students for academic or professional goals while reducing costs.
4. Special Programs and Custom Training: The ELC partners with institutions to create short-term programs tailored to business English, teacher training, or university preparation.
Co-Curricular Support
The ELC provides conversation partners, cultural events, excursions, individualized advising, tutoring, and academic transition support to promote language acquisition and community engagement.
