Urge the U.S. Department of Education to Allocate Fiscal Year 2025 Education Appropriations
Caught in the middle of the U.S. debate and in the midst of federal actions on the role of the U.S. Department of Education (USED) are the millions of English learners at all levels of education, supported by dedicated and impassioned professionals. USED supplements states efforts in serving English learners so that states are better positioned to hire qualified instructors and paraprofessionals, implement quality language instruction programs, provide professional development, and engage with families and communities.
The U.S. federal government wants all to "know English" but unfortunately is undermining the very funding sources that support English instruction. Evidence demonstrates that federal funding supplements lead not only to proficiency but overall academic achievement, and for adult learners, increased workforce opportunities and civic engagement (did you know that 60% of all English learners are U.S. citizens?).
To date, the USED has not allocated congressionally appropriated monies for fiscal year 2025. Schools and programs begin their fiscal year 1 July - next week - and are making decisions based upon this lack of allocation. For public education, PreK-12, the USED has yet to allocate $890 million to the states. For adult education, the USED has yet to allocate $85 million for integrated English language and civics education.
Please take a few minutes and urge your member of Congress to demand that USED fulfill its requirements and allocate these monies. Our schools, educators, communities, and learners depend upon it.
